$28 million in provincial funding kickstarts hundreds of new home starts
June 16, 2026
SHEDDEN – The Township of Southwold is getting shovels in the ground as a result of $28 million in funding received from the Province of Ontario in support of housing-enabling infrastructure investments. Construction of the Shedden Wastewater Treatment Plant has unlocked significant residential development opportunities for the existing settlement areas of Shedden and Fingal that has the potential to result in 2,400 residential housing units. Less than two years after funding was announced, the Township and its partners are mid-way through implementing the first phase of this major project. Mayor Grant Jones was joined by Hon. Rob Flack, MPP Elgin-Middlesex-London, to celebrate this milestone at the site of the initial homes to be completed in 2026.
“I am proud that this Council has prioritized a balance of strategic planning for the future with an action-oriented approach that leverages community connections and plays to our strengths,” said Mayor Grant Jones. “I look forward to seeing all the ways that the development of Shedden and Fingal contributes to making Southwold a great place to live and invest in the years to come.”
Hon. Rob Flack said, “It’s great to see this project moving from planning to reality. This investment is helping unlock new housing opportunities in Shedden and Fingal while supporting the kind of responsible growth that strengthens communities for years to come. Congratulations to Mayor Jones, Council, Township staff, and everyone who has worked hard to move this project forward. I look forward to seeing the benefits it will bring to residents, families, and the local economy.”
While the overall development will be ongoing in the longer term, over 500 units of housing are anticipated to be market-ready for construction in Shedden and Fingal in the next five years. These will consist of varied built forms for all age and financial demographics and include the Township’s first purpose-built rental units, filling a vital gap in the community and region.
Council looks forward to engaging with residents in various formats over the coming months and resident feedback is always welcomed. A list of current planning and development applications can be found at: https://www.southwold.ca/en/business-and-development/current-planning-applications.aspx
