Conflict of Interest

The Municipal Conflict of Interest Act is to prevent members from influencing the consideration of a matter in which they have a direct or indirect pecuniary (financial) interest. When a member has a conflict of interest they are expected to:

• Disclose the interest and the general nature of the interest before the matter is considered at a meeting;
• Not participate in the discussion or vote on the matter;
• Not attempt to influence the voting on the matter before, during or after the meeting.

A person demonstrably acting in the public interest who believes a member has contravened the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, may apply to the Integrity Commissioner to request an investigation within six weeks of becoming aware of a conflict of interest.
