The Township of Southwold has a rich agricultural heritage dating back several hundred years.
Some of our current farmers still own the first tractor their grandparents purchased. Some still run, some are all fixed up and some are just peacefully resting. Early this year Jack Vanderkooy, one of our residents told us about a recent experience he had in Holland where he took part in a vintage tractor road run. His enthusiasm was contagious and our Economic Development Committee and Council agreed to support a similar event right here in Southwold.
On Saturday July 9, our first annual “Southwold by Tractor” road run, with 25 tractors built prior to 1985 taking part, departed from the Fingal Ball Park at 9.30 a.m.
The road run was split into four sections totaling 38 miles with stops at the Phillips farm, the Keystone Complex, the Hoffsuemmer farm and ending up back at the Fingal Ball Park around 3.30 p.m.
Mechanical problems were almost nonexistent although there were unsubstantiated rumours of a red tractor being towed behind the Huron Tractor chase vehicle at one point!
Unfortunately some of our drivers got caught in a couple of afternoon showers but it was not enough to dampen their enthusiasm!
Back at the park we all enjoyed an excellent meal and the final event of the day, the presentation of participation awards to all drivers who completed the entire run and the awarding of the “People’s Choice Best Tractor” trophy, which went to Ron Lyle for his beautiful Ford tractor.
On behalf of our Economic Development Committee, Council, staff, participating tractor owners and everyone involved in the road run organization our sincere thanks to:
The Phillips and Hoffsuemmer families, The Shedden Fair Board, The Fingal SS12 School Committee, Jack Vanderkooy, Huron Tractor and our Volunteer Fire Department for your help and support.
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
